The Sanctuary

We have been a government recognized shelter since 1977 and specialize mainly in birds of prey, owls, hedgehogs and hares.

Our accommodation is located in Weert, in the midst of a varied landscape of woods, meadows, fields and water areas.

The gardens are thoughtfully laid out where natural hedges and loosely stacked walls form the divisions and mammals, birds and amphibians find peace and shelter.

There is a pond, which is used by many wild animals and birds. Different species of bats hunt for insects in the evening.

The kingfisher comes to visit almost daily to catch fish.

In addition to taking care of animals from the wild, we have a broad interest in all aspects of nature and everything that grows and flourishes.

We are in the open air for a longer period of time every day and are attentive to everything that goes on in outdoor life.

Birds of Prey Foundation "Wildlife SOS" is a recognized training company for interns who follow a "Green" training at MBO and HBO level.

Sometimes people think that nature should take its course and that no action should be taken.

However, it should be realized that "real nature" hardly occurs in the Netherlands anymore. Much of our country is below sea level and everything has been overhauled. Injuries to distressed animals that are brought to us, are usually the result of human actions such as traffic, wire, pruning, worry, etc. Shelter is also a social problem.

You do not abandon a bird of prey hanging in the barbed wire.

"Nature belongs to all of us"

Due to new regulations by the government regarding permits for sheltering animals from the wild, a large number of shelter centers have disappeared. Partly because of this, the number of animals that are brought to us is increasing sharply.

Policy.

The activities of our Trust consist of taking care of injured, sick or orphaned native animals from the wild. After care and preparation for a life back in the wild, they are retured to nature.

We also give advice to interested parties.

We work in accordance with the 'quality protocol for wildlife shelters' of the Flora and Fauna Act. Rehabilitation of native protected animals is seen by law as 'in the interest of wildlife'.

The local council is helping as best it can.

Distressed animals are brought at all times of the day, including Sundays and holidays  by police, private individuals, institutions and animal ambulances.
